BEN

Ben joined our family in March 2006, he was seven years old then. My children were desperate for a dog. My husband and I looked forward to lots of lovely walks. We are surrounded by woodlands and public footpaths. I worked during the mornings, so we felt it fair to rescue an older Lab.

We were in for a surprise, when he was brought to our house by Sue from The Labrador Rescue Trust. Sue suggested that we didn't let him off the lead for a couple of weeks, until he got used to us. In fact it was eight months until we could safely let him off. Taking him for his first walk was quite an experience, I had blisters on my hands when I returned. He chased everything that moved, including butterflies! When we saw another dog, he would bound over, with us hanging on for dear life, barking all the way, which could be rather dangerous along the road side.

At home and in the garden he was the most lovable and well behaved dog. The very first night we had him he curled up on his bed and went to sleep, not a peep out of him, we couldn't believe it. The following week we joined socialising classes. My husband used to be dragged in at full speed every week, Ben barking all the way. Looking back he was very excited, although we were the topic of many jokes, even the local vicar found it amusing!

Anyway walking him twice daily, slowing introducing to other dogs, with treats for good behaviour, we started to improve. The dog training worked wonders, we passed the beginners class, intermediate 1 and 2 and advanced. I started to get compliments when we were out walking, how well Ben was doing. The barking stopped, and we now walk nicely up the road. The following January I let him off the lead for the first time. It was lovely seeing him explore and running about, but always checking that I was not far behind. I suppose the highlight was when last July at an awards evening my husband received a trophy for dog and handler of the year.

We feel very lucky to have Ben. He is so loving, and a huge member of our family, a great dog!
