10 Sep Somerset’s 16th Annual Funday & Dog Show
At the time of going to press, we’re still totting up from Area A’s 16th annual Fun Day and Dog Show held this year at Westonzoyland in Somerset and sponsored by Pero Pet Foods and Bridge Veterinary Surgery of Highbridge. But it looks like another good year, with takings, after expenses, approaching £3000, thanks to the fine weather, a lot of hard work and support.
Special thanks to Nicky Pearce and her husband Dick (bric-a-brac and ‘Man’ stalls – don’t ask!), to Gina Bury (registrations), Fiona Onslow and her husband Paul, Belinda Filmer, Ali Wells, Ann Cottell (plants), Phil Gordon-Smith (scurry), Sheila, Dick and David Pratt, David and Pauline Hobgen, Ian and Kristina Cooper, Pam Bytheway (cakes and catering), Pat and Derek Appleyard (tombola), June, Beryl, Kathy, Jane and all the other ladies from our TLRT shop in Bridgwater, Doreen Mayley and last but not least to Sarah Bytheway Schranz for organising the whole thing (and of course her husband Scott for sweating over a hot BBQ all day and to all their other family and friends press-ganged into helping out behind the scenes).
Paws on the Levels’ local agility display team provided 2 excellent demonstrations and then let everyone else have a go, vets John Smith and Richard Taylor, from Polden Hills Veterinary Centre in Cossington, again undertook the difficult job of judging most of the classes, retired vet and author Malcolm Welshman came along to sell and sign his latest book, all in aid of TLRT, and to judge the waggiest tail. Thanks too to our regular photographer Rich McD, Westonzoyland Primary and Pre-school group for their tuck stall, Anne and Bob for running the Dent’s stall, and regular supporters Paul and Sue from Wessex Dogs. We also had Myra from the Cinnamon Trust, Poppy’s Bakery, Spread Your Wings hawk and owl rescue who turn up to support us every year with their collection of beautiful owls, the face-painting lady, Humphry’s Ice Creams, the Dalek, bouncy castle, basket ball game and coco-nut shy and Harley Riders of Somerset showing off their gleaming chrome, so there was plenty to see and do. A beautiful Labrador-themed cake, baked by Pam Bytheway was raffled, raising over £90.
Class winners were: Waggiest Tail – Labrador Eden Bates; TLRT Dog – Guiness Coffee; Junior Handler – Rosie Harvey with Labrador Dolly; Best Trick – Springer Spaniel Amber Gardner; TLRT Bitch – Rizzo Northey; Family Group – the Warners with Labradors Sam, Rosie and Eden; TLRT Veteran – Buddy Pearce; Prettiest Bitch – GSDX Molly Rowson; Handsomest Dog – Billy Symes-Leyton; Scurry – TLRT Labrador Buster Staples; Best in Show – Labrador Guiness Coffee; Reserve – The Warner family of Labradors. Rosettes and prizes from Pero Pet Foods were presented to the 1st 5 in most classes and Labradors seemed to do really well in all the open classes too this year, against strong competition from some other beautiful breeds and Heinz 57s.
The TLRT Grand Summer Raffle, organised all year by Fiona Onslow, was also drawn, with the £1000 1st prize going to Ann La Forte of Didcot. This year’s raffle profits are £8903.02. Not sure where the tuppence came from.
